Prepping for Pride

Ok boys (and girls to) it’s time! Shave those pits and legs and get out your most fabulous wigs! I won’t be indulging but for those who do it’s rather incredible.  Ever see Pricilla? Or To Wong Fu? Well right here in the heart of Toronto the city has some of the best Drag Queens around!

From Michelle Duberry to Diva who unfortunately is no longer on the scene.  My favourite Drag Queen was one that went by the name of Mary Poppers! Andrew Trann as CruellaShe was hilarious and I am often trying to get her back on sage. She sports an outstanding beard these days! Damn she was good!

There is a lot of work that goes in to being a Drag Queen. As you know I sing and back in the 90’s I would sing at this bar called The Bar in Whitby Ontario! It was an amazing and magical place. I have never experience anything since then. I think the owners names were Lorna and Phee. I can’t recall but they loved us. They were mean suckers but they loved us.

When I would be getting ready for my show I would see the Drag Queens all getting ready for their performances to and it was amazing the work that went into pulling that all together. Even though they were only lip-syncing I felt like the imposter.

Diva was a complete bitch on the outside but a sweetheart on the inside and I loved her. She has Cher down to a fine art! I was in aw of every performance she did. I wish I knew where she was today. I hope she is doing well. One never knows. She reminded me of one of those old Hollywood Starlets that had seen it all. I was the novice even  though I had already won the C.N.E Rising Star by then and was performing all over.

Spending time with these performers taught me so much. It’s a tough world out there and they didn’t have a problem with telling me the truth about it. It was an amazing time in my life performing at The Bar. I met some amazing people and got to really work my own talent. The Bar is no longer there. Its a stupid sports bar but for those that went here in the 90’s it was something very special!

Can’t wait for Pride!

About Bruce in the City

I have been writing my blog since 2010. I was inspired to do so after enjoying an amazing meal with some friends of mine here in Toronto. I decided to tell everyone about my great night and the fabulous restaurant I went to and shazam my blog was born!
