Betting on Betty’s….

Clubs and Bars

Someone tell me it’s not true? I’m standing looking straight up into the sky. A towering mass of steel and glass stare me down making me feel like a small circus poodle. No, it was not a transformer. It’s the brother of five other towers called the TD Centre located at Bay and King. I find it is necessary to head up to the 27Th floor for a meeting. The 27th floor!!! I tried cancelling. I insisted that we have this meeting on the ground but it just wasn’t an option. You see I have a bit of a phobia about heights as well as elevators. So, I had two serious nightmares facing me. Well, I just pulled up my pants to near camel-toe and got into that damn elevator. I was just freaking out! I’m doing it! As I sat in the office, my heart was pounding. Because, of course, I was sitting right beside the window. When I had a moment alone, I had to take a couple of pictures. And yes, I had my camera.

Well, with my feet finally flat on the ground, I quickly texted a friend to meet me for a cocktail. It was time to find my next establishment to add to my blogs hit parade!!!! I needed any excuse to get my mind off the 27th floor! Anyway my lips were lubed up and ready to give out some kisses. Of course, the company that joined me was eager to share some interesting gossip. But, insisted on waiting until we found just the right watering hole. We were making our way east on King and passed a few possible spots but some looked too black tie, some looked a little too shabby chic. We needed a place that really fit our mood. Kind of “hippy like” with just the right amount of humble pie. I had had my fill of corporate for one day.

There she was just a standin on the street, singin – “Doo Wah Diddy Diddy Dum Diddy Doo”. Sort of calling out to us like a sexy reformed prostitute. “Betty’s” looked just perfect. We got inside her and looked around, so bohemian and retro. It really had the feel of a small New York tavern and with Belinda Carlisle playing in the background. I thought “Darling leave the (“red” -ed.) light on for me”. The mementos hanging on the wall are so obscure and strange, it took several moments to digest. Passed on ordering from our waitress Joleen, just to take it all in. Fun! “I like it here”. I could see myself working here 20 years ago. OK, 10 years ago! It would have been a blast! Of course, I did work for East Side Mario’s years ago. And man, the nights we had after closing up the bar….outstanding! Joleen was a sweetheart and enjoyed the fact that we were so taken by the wall art. We ordered a Caesar and the house beer which I tried. It was very good. I’m not a big beer drinker. My beer has to have clamato juice in it. Don’t even say yuck! It is amazing – try it.

What did we eat? Yes, wings and quesadillas!!!! Fabulous!!! They were very good. And, so much that we actually couldn’t finish it all. That is very unusual for me. I have a hollow leg. After several Caesars and one too many house beers, my friend finally shared the gossip with me. Apparently, I had been the butt of some unkind words from an acquaintance of mine. I wouldn’t say I was shocked. But I have to admit, I never thought my own personal life issues would be the fodder for someone else’s cocktail hour. I guess I had to decide then and there, whether I was going to let it hurt me. Or, was I going to accept the fact that I may have acted the same way if I was in the same position?

I decided I would let it go and have another Caesar. I did decide, however, that maybe I wouldn’t be such an open book in future. That way I wouldn’t be fodder for the gossip mill. When betting on anything in life, you can bet on this – your friends, as much as they love you, will gossip about you and let’s face it, you them.  Hey, remember it’s one thing to have a massive skyscraper make you feel like a little circus poodle. But, your friends should do their best not to do the same!

And….. Betty’s, I would recommend her any night of the week and twice on Sunday!

Betty’s get 4 kisses out of 5!
